The People Who Are Most Impressive Aren't the Prettiest

A woman hawking in the Midlands in the United Kingdom.
Me being brave with a hawk in 2017 in the Midlands, England.

There’s nothing quite so vulnerable as starting over in a new city.

And one thing I’ve returned to that’s clearer than ever as I try to make friends and meet people and date is that, when in a pressure cooker of change, a part of me wants to bend a bit to fit in.

But then I remember who I look up to and who I find the most impressive. And I kicked this off with the superficial because that’s somewhat our default in this day and age with limited attention spans: to latch on to what looks the shiniest and prettiest and dwell there, sipping the nectar of the superficial.

But here’s one of my truths of life (and you might have already come to a similar conclusion):

The people who are most impressive aren’t the prettiest or the most “successful,” as defined by financial success, a job title, or a follower count.

Don’t get me wrong—impressive people can, of course, have all those things. The point is what makes them impressive isn’t inherently superficial.

It’s how they’ve built themselves brick by brick to be uniquely themselves, despite the curveballs of life.

It’s the values they believe in and actually practice. It’s the goals they have and actually pursue.

It’s the ability to stand alone when they don’t agree instead of standing with the crowd.

In essence, they’re the bravest.

They’re the ones who are most willing to be completely, wholeheartedly themselves.

They’re courageous with their individuality.

They fully own who they are and their imperfections.

Hell, they even LOVE who they are, regardless of what people think.

They aren’t afraid of growth.

They aren’t afraid to change—they expect it; they embrace it.

They’re willing to live a life that’s true to themselves, not because they’re worried about their coworkers’, friends’, or families’ opinions of them.

They’re willing to do things that are uncomfortable.

My current personal endeavor is to be one of them.
